How do I teach you to not see color
when the same God who created YOU is the same Creator who made color?
Color is used to describe, to compare, to elicit feeling.
Color is both abstract and concrete. It is inanimate and yet somehow alive.
So perhaps teaching you to not see color is unwise. To not see color is to disregard uniqueness, to ignore beauty.
But sometimes color can be used to compose “the other.” The “not like me.”
Can I somehow put a filter over your heart so that when you see difference you recognize oneness?
So that when you hear, see, feel hate towards “the other”, you will adamantly deny it and proclaim the love of the One who first loved you?
I declare right here, in this space, that I am not without prejudice. I am not without fear. I am guilty of sloppily pasting lies onto the ever thickening wall dividing me from the “not like me”.
But I recognize that in myself and I challenge it so that as I raise you, my girl, you will prudently but willfully start ripping away those layers of lies until all that is left of that wall is pile of scraps that we can BURN and in it’s place allow a seed to bring life to the ashes.
Yes, this is my prayer. That color would go on bringing uniqueness and beauty to this earth, and that love would grow in the grayed ashes of hate.
Drips and wet kisses,
HK
